What Are Pulpotomies?
Pulpotomies, also known as baby root canals, are minimally invasive dental procedures that involve removing the soft, innermost layer of a tooth, known as the pulp. They are most often performed on children’s primary teeth. Pulpotomies can treat infections and cavities and are generally followed by a filling or dental crown to restore the tooth’s function and protect its structure.

One of our dentists at Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry will examine your child’s teeth to determine if they need a pulpotomy or other dental procedures. The dentist will then prescribe medication for your child before the procedure.
Before the pulpotomy procedure, the dentist will numb the affected area with a local anesthetic. We use topical anesthesia so it won’t hurt your child.
At Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry, we use a drill and special tools to remove the infected tissue from the tooth's crown. After removing the decayed tissue, the remaining healthy pulp is cleaned and disinfected before it’s sealed off with dental cement.
Once the damaged tissue has been removed, your child’s tooth will be restored with a dental filling or crown. This helps to protect the tooth and prevent further decay.

Pulpotomy treatment is usually not painful for most children. It is completed with local anesthesia, so your child may not experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
If your child has a pulp infection, a pulpotomy can help save their teeth from being lost. Contact Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry today to schedule an appointment with our pediatric dentists and learn more about our restorative dentistry services in National City.
A typical pulpotomy procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
Your child may need a pulpotomy if they have an infection that has reached the tooth's pulp. This procedure can also be used to treat a cracked tooth or a tooth that has had trauma.
