It’s so important to save your child’s teeth whenever possible because they play a huge role in their oral health, facial development, bite alignment, speech, nutrition, and overall health. Many parents make the mistake of thinking that baby teeth aren’t as important because they are going to naturally fall out anyway.
However, failing to care for your child’s teeth can cause them immense pain and serious oral health problems that put their overall health at risk. Losing a tooth can cause speech problems, difficulty eating certain foods and insecurity in their smile.
Missing teeth can cause bone loss and shifting teeth that cause orthodontic problems. This can block the eruption of the underlying permanent tooth, causing it to be impacted. All of these problems can be avoided through prevention and minimally invasive treatment that will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
One of our dentists will carefully examine your teeth and take x-rays to look for signs of tooth decay and infection. Digital scans will show us if an abscess is present and if decay has spread to the dental pulp, which indicates that the tooth is infected. We can also see how far the infection is spread and if a root canal is still viable.
To prevent your child from feeling any pain, we will administer local anesthesia which completely numbs their mouth. If your child has dental anxiety, special needs, or low pain tolerance, we also offer dental sedation options to help them relax.
Once your child’s mouth is numbed and they are comfortable, we will use a dental drill to gain access to the tooth’s pulp chamber and will remove the tooth’s pulp all the way down to the roots. This will remove the source of the infection and provide pain relief.
Each of the tooth’s canals is thoroughly sanitized and reshaped. This process can take 1 to 2 appointments depending on how many canals the tooth has.
A special rubber-like material known as gutta-percha is placed in the center of the tooth to replace the missing pulp. This restores the tooth’s strength and functionality. However, the rear teeth need extra protection from breakage because the root canal procedure can weaken the teeth and they undergo more chewing forces. We recommend protecting these teeth with dental crowns.

After the procedure, your child’s mouth will be numb for a few hours. It’s normal for them to feel a little sore once the numbing wears off, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. To help the tooth heal, we’ll provide detailed instructions, like avoiding sticky or hard foods and making sure your child brushes and flosses carefully around the treated area.
Once healed, the tooth will function just like their other teeth, allowing your child to chew, smile, and speak with confidence. Regular visits to Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry will help keep their restored tooth and the rest of their smile in great shape.
We know many parents worry about their child’s comfort, especially when it comes to dental treatments. Rest assured, root canal therapy is not as scary as it sounds! At Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry, we use the latest technology and plenty of numbing to ensure your child feels as little discomfort as possible. For most kids, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than getting a cavity filled.
The real relief comes after the procedure, as root canal therapy eliminates the pain caused by the infection or damage. Our caring team, including Dr. Rene, Dr. Pat, Dr. Rafal, Dr. Eunice, Dr. Nadia, and Dr. Marshall, is dedicated to keeping your child relaxed and comfortable from start to finish.
There are some clear signs that your child may need a root canal. If they complain of persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, or discomfort when chewing, it’s a good idea to schedule a visit. You might also notice physical changes like swelling in their gums, a tooth that looks darker than the others, or even a small bump on the gums near the affected tooth.
However, not all cases come with obvious symptoms, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important. At Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry, we make it a priority to catch issues early to protect your child’s smile and prevent bigger problems down the road.
Root canal therapy is a special dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has been damaged or infected, often due to deep cavities, cracks, or injuries. In kids, this treatment focuses on preserving the natural tooth, which is essential for proper development, speech, and chewing. During the procedure, the damaged inner part of the tooth (called the pulp) is carefully removed, the area is cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed to prevent further problems. At Sweetwater Pediatric Dentistry, we use gentle techniques and a kid-friendly approach to make sure your child feels safe and cared for throughout the process.
